Non-toxic Cleaning Solution Recipes

  1. Drain Cleaner

    Drains: 1 cup each baking soda, salt, and white vinegar. Pour into drain. Wait 15 minutes. Flush with boiling water. 


  2. Tub and Tile Cleaners

    Tub-and-tile: Sprinkle baking soda, borax, or dry table salt on the surface to be cleaned, then scour and rinse. 


  3. Mold and Mildew Removers

    Molds and mildew: Mix borax or vinegar with water in a spray bottle.  Spray mixture on mold and wipe off. 


  4. Furniture Polish

    Furniture Polish: Mix 2 tsp. lemon oil and 1-pint mineral oil in a spray bottle.


  5. Laundry Soaps

    Use phosphate-free laundry soaps. There are plenty to choose from on your grocer's shelves. 


  6. Oven Cleaners

    Oven cleaners: Those containing lye and ammonia are especially toxic. For a healthier alternative, mix two teaspoons borax and two tablespoons liquid soap in a spray bottle of water. Scrub vigorously.


  7. Carpet Deodorizer

    Carpet Deodorizer: Sprinkle with baking soda. Vacuum after 30 minutes.


  8. Window & Mirror Cleaner

    Window and mirror: Mix with one part vinegar to one part water.  Spray on, and wipe off.


  9. General Disinfectant

    Disinfectant: Use one-half cup borax or sodium carbonate (washing soda) dissolved in a gallon of hot water. 


  10. All-Purpose Cleaner

    All-purpose cleaner: mix a cup of vinegar in a pail of water. Instead of bleach substitute borax, lemon juice or hydrogen peroxide.


  11. Rug Deodorizer

    Rug deodorizer: Apply baking soda liberally and leave for 15 minutes before vacuuming. 


  12. Rug Shampoo

    Rug shampoo: Mix 1 quart white vinegar and 3 quarts boiling water. (Test a hidden patch for color fastness first.)


  13. Abbrasive Cleaner

    Abrasive cleaner: Rub with cut lemon dipped in borax, then rinse.


  14. Ant Killers

    Ant killers: Discourage entry with chili powder.
