  1. Can I save energy by switching my light bulbs?

Yes.  The common household light bulbs that we use are called incandescent bulbs.  Though these bulbs may be inexpensive initially, they are highly inefficient.  They convert less than 10% of the energy they use into light, using the other 90% to create heat.  Their average lifetime is 750 – 1000 hours – that’s about three hours a day for one year.

On the other hand, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) are highly efficient.  They create almost no heat and have an average life of up to 10,000 hours.  And, they use about 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs.  The initial cost difference ($0.99 versus $10-15 per bulb) between incandescent bulbs and CFLs eventually evens out, especially when you may not have to replace that bulb for up to ten years!

  2. Where can I buy Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) in Central Oregon?

Globe Lighting in Bend sells Energy Star certified lighting fixtures, as well as CFLs.

Most places that sell light bulbs now carry CFLs.  This includes Home Depot and Fred Meyer, as well as local hardware stores.  If your favorite local hardware store does not carry CFLs, let them know that you are interested.

  3. What are some other ways that I can save on my energy bill?

There are a number of options available to consumers looking to save.  There are some simple solutions like turning lights off and utilizing natural light as much as possible.  Consumers can switch just a few high traffic lights to Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs).  They can also choose to install Energy Star certified lighting fixtures.  These fixtures are efficient for a number of reasons.  They distribute the light around the room, eliminating the need for many, cluttered lamps in one room.
