Macroinvertebrate Monitoring on Whychus Creek
Join the Xerces Society and Upper Deschutes Watershed Council in collecting aquatic macroinvertebrate samples from Whychus Creek. Participants will be given a brief introduction to aquatic macroinvertebrates and trained in sampling techniques. Teams will depart to monitoring stations, collect aquatic macroinvertebrate samples between mid-morning to early afternoon, and return the samples at Creekside Park. Click link above for more information.
Why monitor aquatic macroinvertebrates?
Aquatic macroinvertebrate communities reflect a stream’s
biological health and can be used to track in-stream changes
due to land use, restoration projects, and conservation
efforts. Macroinvertebrate data collected in this project
will be compared to data collected previously in 2005 and data
to be collected in 2013. This approach tracks changes to
the in-stream health of Whychus Creek and allows for evaluation
of the
effectiveness of restoration and conservation projects to
improve conditions for Whychus Creek native fish
populations.
