40,000 pounds of Trash Removed from Oregon’s Beaches

Target volunteers get ready to scour Cannon Beach. September 20, 2008…The SOLV Great Oregon Fall Beach Cleanup annual event held in 2008 was a great success! More than 3,700 volunteers scoured the entire Oregon coast, over 360 miles, to clean the beaches of debris and trash that had accumulated during the summer months. Volunteers removed an estimated 40,000 pounds of trash from the coastline. Some volunteers have been participating in this event religiously for the last ten years, and some drove more than 200 miles to participate at their favorite beach.

History

Volunteer hikes along the beach at Bandon.

The first Beach Cleanup in the nation was held here in Oregon in 1984. Since then, annual beach cleanups have spread to every state in the Union, all US territories and more than 100 countries around the world. In 2006, 358,617 volunteers picked up over 7 million pounds of trash from 34,560 miles of coastline nationwide.

Volunteers, lots of volunteers, are needed to make the Beach Cleanup a success. Trashy beaches put a damper on tourism and the economy it supports. Plastic litter and debris harm marine wildlife. By volunteering for a Beach Cleanup, you can make a difference!
