Experiences as a Freelance Journalist

Presented by Tim Neville

The past year has been a busy one for Tim Neville, a freelance journalist based in Bend who travels the world to write about outdoor adventure for Outside, National Geographic Adventure, and Skiing magazines among others. The string of assignments started last winter when he attempted to build an igloo village deep in the Deschutes National Forest for a story that appeared in Outside's January 2008 issue. From there he was to Chamonix, France, for Skiing magazine to write about speed flying, a sport whereby skiers descend bold lines with modified paragliding wings. That story recently earned him a slot in the 2008 anthology of The Best American Sports Writing.

In August, Outside's Go magazine dispatched him to Mongolia, where he zoomed around the Eastern Steppe in a Russian MI-8 helicopter following the CEO of The Nature Conservancy as he worked to find ways to create new parks and reserves among the world's most pristine grasslands. In September he found time to get married and hike the Napali Coast of Kauai with his new bride. Throw in a diving trip to Japan's remote Ryukyu archipelago in October, a fishing trip to Belize in November, and adventures around Tahiti in December, and Tim figures his carbon footprint must be the size of the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge. By the time he takes the microphone on May 14th for the Cascades Mountaineers, he'll be back from ski touring around the steamy volcanoes of Japan's Daisetsuzan National Park and fresh off another assignment to climb and ski around Chamonix. Tim plans to share tales from the road as well as talk about why some of his most entertaining adventures have been right here in Bend.

A former editor on the travel desk at Outside and now a correspondent for Skiing magazine, Tim Neville has traveled to more than 50 countries and speaks four languages, five including Pig Latin though his accent is atrocious. He is a diehard skier, diver, biker and general goof, who discovered the joys of nature after living a tent in his Maryland backyard for five months--long enough that his parents eventually rented out his room. When not on the road, he and his gear live in midtown, where he writes full time and tries to post updates on what he's been up to at www.timneville.net
