Oregon Trout
Founded in 1983 by a small group of committed conservationists,
Oregon Trout has long worked to protect and restore native fish
and their ecosystems through innovative education and habitat
restoration programs. By forwarding science-based conservation
solutions with an eye toward good working results, Oregon Trout
has built a track record of working with all stakeholders to
address the root cause of an issue in order to achieve lasting
results. Our ultimate goal is to return health to streams
statewide, while building a generation of Oregonians compelled
to act as stewards of their home waters. For the past 22 years,
Oregon Trout has worked to protect native fish and their
ecosystems through innovative education and habitat restoration
programs.
Our educational programs provide a sense of place through
hands-on experiences that equip students to understand and
address local community issues in informed and innovative ways
so that they contribute to their community's long-term health
and vitality. Our programs feature inquiry-based science that
allows teachers to fulfill recently mandated educational
responsibilities, and we have structured them to be easily
replicated in other regions.
Our habitat restoration programs seek to protect and restore
critical areas for native salmon, trout, and steelhead in the
most productive ecosystems and species-rich rivers in the
Pacific Northwest. When a network of these habitats is
protected and wild fish conservation becomes a basin management
priority, a fish refuge has been created. With broad support
from private and public partners, our approach has become
recognizable as not only credible conceptually, but workable on
the ground: to date we have created several secure fish refuges
across the state.
